Charles Town Ends Fall Race Meeting
Charles M. Feltner Of Berryville Saddles Eleven Winners To Top Other Trainers
Charles Town bade farewell to its December race meeting of the Charles Town Jockey Club as the sixteen-day meeting closed Saturday with a crowd of 8,000 people in attendance.
From all angles the meeting was declared a success, and to Charles M. Feltner, Berryville owner and trainer, went the honor of saddling more winners than any other trainer at the track. Mr. Feltner was rewarded to see eleven of his thoroughbreds romp home in 32 starts. In that number of starts, his stable placed 27 in the money, which is considered a good record.
A fitting climax of the meeting was the victory of the Feltner-trained Kenty. owned by E. R. Pike and Kenneth N. Gilpin. who copped the $1,000 Waterford Handicap. Kenty made it his fifth purse of the year in 21 starts. and it was his third straight victory.
His owner was presented with a handsome silver trophy by Mrs. A. J. Boyle. wife of the general manager.
The big brown son of Teddy-Lady Emmaline was given a powerful ride by Jockey George Napier, but was almost overcome by Silent Shot in stretch. It was nip-and-tuck with first Windsor's Hope, then Taipan and then Postponement taking the lead. Napier held the big colt in, but swung him out in the back stretch where he forged to the front.
Silent Shot, at home in the heavy going, bore down on Kenty in the home stretch, but he lost speed at the end and the big brown was home.
Another Feltner-trained horse, Tuleryries Lin. owned by Mrs. L. L. Bull of the Tuleyries, was third in the third race on Saturday's card.
Mr. Feltner. however, was not the only Clarke county trainer to annex purses at Charles Town. Others were Percy Randolph and Capt. Ewart Johnston.
Mr. Feltner will ship the first of the year to Hot Springs, Arkansas, for the winter meeting there.
