Full Text

Extract of a letter from Washington, to the editor of the Baltimore American, dated 13th March, 1808.

DEAR SIR,

The Vice-President has appeared in the American Citizen of the 10th inst. under his own signature.

It is to be regretted that he has not signified his approbation or disapprobation of the nomination that has been made. Will he serve again as Vice-President if re-elected? Or will he offer himself as a candidate for the Presidency? If he do, the union of the republican party will be insured, and the vain attempts of ambitious schismatics be defeated. He ought, however, to declare his intentions; for a gentleman in office, is generally considered as willing to continue therein, unless he declares to the contrary.

The caucus at Lancaster had but one great object in view, that of making Snyder their next governor. No question as to the person who should be put in nomination for President, was agitated. The electors are each left to determine for himself as to the proper character. The different parties here each claim a majority. For your satisfaction, I send you a statement of the probable result of the election. Indeed, without some unforeseen event should happen, it is almost certain.

Yours, &c.
