IMPOSING CEREMONIES

Over the Remains of Peter Cooper Witnessed by a Vast Throng.

New York, April 7.—There was a general display of flags at half mast throughout the city, in honor of the memory of Peter Cooper, whose funeral took place to-day. The funeral was largely attended.

As the hour for services approached the crowd increased and additional policemen were sent for. The police had no difficulty in preserving order for the mass of people was well conducted. All the seats in the church not reserved for the family friends and delegations, were filled at noon and many secured standing room in the rear of the church, two hours before the services began.

Shortly before 3 o'clock the bells began tolling and Rev. Dr. Robert Collyer, Rev. Dr. Howard Crosby and Rev. Thomas M. Peters took their places in the pulpit, the family entered and the services began with singing "I heard a voice."

Rev. Mr. Peters read a selection from the scriptures and the hymn "I'll praise my maker" was sung.

A eulogy was pronounced by Rev. Dr. Collyer, and followed by a brief address and prayer by Rev. Dr. Crosby.

The hymn, "Guide me, O thou great Jehovah" was sung, and services concluded with the benediction.

The remains were taken to Greenwood cemetery. The bells of the city tolled as the great procession moved to the ferry, where it was dismissed. It seemed as though the population of New York not in the procession had gathered upon the sidewalks and their heads uncovered as the body was borne past. Only one carriage, containing the male members of Mr. Cooper's family, accompanied the body to the cemetery, where it was deposited in the vault. The remains will be interred the coming week.
