The Magnolia News a few days ago had in its news columns this bit of interesting reading about a Columbia County farmer. "F. F. Lincoln who lives on Route one near Magnolia has kindly handed us the following information about one Jersey cow and the herd he has raised during the past ten years. Mr. Lincoln is interested in cows and dairying and what he says is worthy of consideration. Mr. Lincoln says:
"I will give you the following information on a Jersey cow that I own which will show you that with but a few cows to start with a good sized herd can be brought to production within a very short time. I started with one calf named Daisy born September 21, 1917. She brought her first calf January 21, 1920. She has brought eight calves of which four were heifers. The four heifers have had sixteen calves of which five were heifers. Daisy is the great grandmother of four calves of which two are heifers. From her twenty-seven head of cattle have been born and eleven of these were heifers. The mother cow is still a good producer and is giving milk also her four heifer calves and two grand calves. There are also three small heifer calves that are prospective heifers. The above statement will show that in less than ten and one half years one cow has created twenty-eight head of which twelve are producers or prospective producers. I do not know whether or not this is unusual for a cow but it may be that the whole family of heifers are still together. I call it my Daisy Herd and we milk them ten months out of the year."
