EXAMINATION IN GEOGRAPHY.
Conducted at the Unionville Public School Friday, March 2d, 1888—C. H. Groves, Teacher.
Give the capitals of the following, viz: Dakota, Servia, Paraguay, Arabia, Tasmania, New Brunswick, Barca, Beloochistan, Dutch Guiana and Honduras.
Of what countries are the following capitals, viz.: Managua, Mourzouk, Wellington, Cabul, Bucharest, Montevideo, Battleford, Sitka, Batavia and Prescott?
II.
How much less is the polar than the equatorial diameter of the earth? What of the northern boundaries of Vermont and Wyoming and New York? What countries of Europe are empires, and which are republics?
What changes of temperature does one encounter in going from the base of a high mountain to its summit? Name three rivers that empty into the North Sea. Of what river is the Juniata a branch? Mention six of the leading sea ports of the United States. What peculiarity of the animals apteryx, kangaroo and whale?

Mention, with capitals, the political divisions of Australia. Describe Australia. Where is the present center of population of the United States? What is the area of the United States? Its population? Length from east to west? Breadth from north to south? What is the curvature of the earth to the mile? Mention two of the chief ports of the St. Lawrence River Valley, and two of the Mississippi Valley.

What is climate, and upon what does it chiefly depend? Describe the "zone of calms," the trade and counter-trade winds.
What is the altitude (about) of Star Peak, Unionville, Leadville and Virginia City? What and where is the highest city in the world? Which is the only city of the world that is situated upon the equator? What grand divisions of the earth are crossed by the equator? Also by the respective tropics and polar circles? What evidences have we of heat in the interior of the earth?

What bodies of water does Welland Canal connect?—What is the name of the peninsula between the Mediterranean and Black Seas? What three large rivers of Europe rise in the Alps? What river forms part of the boundary between New York and Pennsylvania?
What seaport in the south of France? What large city at the mouth of the Ganges? Name five large rivers of Africa. What noted river empties into the Dead Sea? Upon what river is the capital of Russia situated? Where is the Shenandoah river? What two rivers empty into the Persian gulf?
VI.
Name and locate ten important straits. Travel by water from Providence, R. I., to Nashville, Tenn. What is the largest city of the United States not situated upon navigable water? Where is Lake Como? What and where are Andorra, Cohoes, Kansas City, Corinth, Cochin China, Fargo, Herat, Khartoum, Zante, Suakin and Osaka.
Mention the chief exports and imports of the United States, France and China.

What is the highest mountain peak of the United States, and how high? What is the highest peak of the Appalachian Mountains? Bound Nevada. Name its highest mountain peak, longest river, largest lake, largest city, three largest counties, three smallest counties, and tell the name of the county seat of White Pine county.
What is the greatest northern limit reached by man? By whom? What of Yakutsk, Siberia! What are the largest towns in Greenland and Iceland?

Give briefly the physical geography of Nevada. Compare California and Nevada as regards rainfall, giving reasons for difference. What causes the great emigration from Europe to America? How do you account for our limited knowledge of Africa?
Why is the climate of the southern countries of Europe so mild? Why are the western coast of North America and Europe warmer than the eastern coasts of North America and Asia, in the same latitude?
IX.
What countries produce the following articles of commerce, viz.: Quicksilver, diamonds, coal, ivory, mahogany, camphor, cork, cloves, India-rubber, pepper, sponge, turpentine, resin and guano.
Name the four chief productions of Australia. Define isothermal lines, canyons, cereals, icebergs and glaciers.
Name two states in which manufacturing comprises the leading occupation; ditto, mining, lumbering, grazing and farming. Why are there no large rivers flowing westward from South America?
X.
Name the uses of winds. Speak of the Gulf stream and polar currents. Mention the countries bordering upon the Mediterranean Sea. Explain an artesian well or spring.
Mention and define the geological ages. Mention and define the different kinds of clouds. In conclusion, what are the objects to be attained by the study of geography?
