In inserting the following article, we are far from attaching implicit credit to the circumstances stated, as we have no doubt that the destitution of principle, that sanctions a violation of law, would not hesitate to sanction falsehood:

"The ship that went to sea from Bath a short time since, was the Sally, lately belonging to Mr. John Richardson, loaded with lumber.--We have been favored with a letter from that place giving the following account of her--The ship started from the wharf between 12 and 1 o'clock, the custom house pimps looking on, at a distance, but not daring to interfere to stop her --the fort commenced firing as soon as she appeared in sight, and continued till she got out of reach, only one ball touched the ship; several who counted the shots say about 50 shot were fired -they used at the fort 2 long 18's, 2 24's and one 6 pounder. and if they had ever so many guns, they could not have made use of more than they did -The ship passed within 8 or 10 rods of the fort, and as soon as she got out of reach of the guns, the cutter which laid at the wharf, and fired at the ship as she passed, was manned by the soldiers in addition to her crew, with an intention to board her, but could not overtake her, and with difficulty got back themselves, after picking up the ship's pilot and two men--there were only 17 men with the pilot on board when she went out of the river, and several of them walked on the deck as she passed the fort, apparently with unconcern--one of the soldiers jumped upon the breastwork of the fort, and with a musket took aim at the capt. of the ship, which compliment was returned from her, and was the only gun she fired--the departure of the ship by the fort was witnessed by hundreds, 30 sleighs went down from Bath, The new embargo law cannot be enforced in this town."
