NEXT THURSDAY
The several committees recently named to arrange for the meeting of the Vermilion Range Old Settlers in this city next Thursday, July 21, have things well in hand and the meeting promises to be as successful as its predecessors.
As usual the Old Settlers will gather on Thursday morning and at ten o'clock a parade will be formed and after marching through the streets of the city, will go to Sandy Point where the annual picnic will be held. As usual the association will furnish its renowned "booya," coffee, cream and sugar in addition to the picnic lunches prepared by the members.
After the noon meal, a program of water sports will take place under the direction of the picnic committee on sports. According to E. LaBeau, chairman of the sports committee, these events will be run in the following order under the supervision of Max M. Herseth, swimming instructor at the Ely schools:
Short spurts for boys and girls under sixteen years of age; short spurts for boys and girls over sixteen years of age; canoe race, (four entries to win three prizes): diving exhibition: 1/4 mile race for girls and 1/4 mile race for boys: canoe tilting, (four entries to win 3 prizes); exhibition in life saving.
J. Adam Bede will make the addresses both at the grounds and at the banquet and another speaker is being sought for the occasion, probably Warren E. Greene or Louis Collins. This feature of the day will be very much enjoyed. J. Adam is recognized as one of the best in the country and his services are sought for on occasions of this kind. The committee was fortunate in securing him for this event.
The banquet will take place at 6 o'clock at the Memorial dining room. At this banquet the officers for the ensuing year will be elected and the annual business meeting held. The banquet is open only to old settlers and their families.
A ball will conclude the festivities of the day for which the Five Aces will furnish the music. Already a large number of banquet reservations are in the hands of the banquet committee, Jas. Moonan, chairman and more will be received on the day of the reunion.
The weather is all that is to be taken into consideration for the making of a perfect day and it is to be hoped that the weather man will be good to us for the occasion.
Mayor Murphy has declared a holiday for Thursday and the business houses will close for the day thus giving all a chance to meet with the old timers and enjoy the program provided. The Community Band will furnish music for the occasion.
