DOMESTIC ANECDOTE.

A noted lawyer, residing in this state, having a cause to be tried before the court some time since, fearing he should lose his case, if calm reason, unassisted by that transmuting menstruum, sterling West India, influenced the minds of his jurors; and accordingly took that expedient, which state-gamblers have taken (if fame speaks true) in causes of greater importance; circulating the intoxicating draught freely, soon diffused a generous sentiment in their honest minds, and like the sun, quickly dispelled those misty clouds; which before seemed to envelop his case--now shining clear as crystal. The cause came on, and the circumstances of the affair appearing so plain, the court were unanimous against him, and gave their charge to the jury accordingly. A person, who had observed his conduct through the whole, not recollecting that his jurors were under the influence of a stronger principle than that of "law and evidence," says to him, "well, you have lost your case, it seems:" "Yes, says he, I have lost it by honours, but by G--l, I'll win it by tricks;" and so it happened, the jury brought in a verdict in his favour.
