To Prevent Land Going to Waste.
MARION COUNTY LAND Is Entirely too Valuable to Remain Idle.
Farmers are Beginning to Awaken to the Fact and Many Ditches are Being Tiled.
Land in Marion county is becoming so valuable that farmers are having practically all of the open ditches tiled so as to prevent any land going to waste.
"The majority of ditches now being constructed are old ditches which are being tiled," states County Surveyor Edward S. Ault.
It is said that in all counties when the land reached a certain valuation, say $100 an acre or thereabouts, the farmers begin to tile their open ditches. This is the case in Marion county, where there are many open ditches which must be closed so that the land may be redeemed.
A ditch of two miles or so in length when allowed to remain open will take up no small amount of valuable land. When closed and tiled, this land is redeemed for use.
The county commissioners were out Monday and viewed the routes of the Ransom and Berry ditches, both of which are now open and are to be three miles long and will extend through Prospect township. The final hearing will be December 12.
The Berry ditch will extend three miles through Pleasant township. The final hearing will take place December 19.
