CORBETT IS SHY.
He Fails to Get a Majority of the Republican Members,
Salem, Ore., Oct. 3.-Thirty-six republican members of the legislature held a caucus to-night to nominate a candidate for United States senator to be voted for in separate session of the legislature to-morrow. A vote was taken and H. W. Corbett received 31 out of the 36 present. His vote is three short of a majority of the republican members of the legislature, and 15 short of a majority of the legislature on joint ballot, 46 being necessary to a choice.

An anti-Corbett member to-night said the populists had appointed a committee to confer with them to-morrow. At a caucus of the populists to-night it is understood that it was decided to support Secretary of State H. R. Kincaid, a silver republican, for United States senator.
