Tuesday last was the day appointed by law for the annual inspection of the arms and equipments of the Militia of this State. These were found to be in good order in all the companies of the Salem regiment, except that of the south-east ward. That company is composed of some of the most effective and best disposed men in the town, has always been conspicuous in the regiment for its good appearance, and military behaviour; and it must have been mortifying to them, to have been deprived, on Tuesday last, of the opportunity of performing the duty required of them by law, by a shameful neglect in the clerk to warn the company; to which he suffered himself to be bribed. We blush that we have so good authority as the Major-General for this account of so infamous a conduct.
The Salem Cadets and Artillery were as usual complete in every article.
A person informs us, that riding on Tuesday about 20 miles eastward from Salem, he had the pleasure of seeing many excellent companies paraded, perfectly armed and equipped, and under the discipline of respectable officers: he noticed particularly a troop of horse at Ipswich, under the command of Capt. Hammond, in complete uniform, and well mounted; and four companies of foot, in battalion, under Col. Hodgkins, a veteran officer of the revolutionary army.
