A building to cost a million dollars, the construction of which will require ten years, is to be erected in a lonely spot in the forests of Logan county, Arkansas.
The magnificent structure in its strange location will be the new monastery of the Order of St. Benedictine.
The new edifice will be the finest and most magnificent structure in the Southwest and possibly the costliest in the entire South.
Five miles from the prosperous little city of Paris, Arkansas, is an institution of which the world knows little. It is a monastery of the Order of St. Benedictine, known as the San Subia monastery. It is one of a number in the South which pursue the even tenor of a life entirely apart from things worldly.
The report comes that this fall will see work begin on a new building to take the place of the one now occupied. It will exceed in architectural beauty and magnificence any building in this section of the country. Ten years will be consumed in completing it, and it will represent an outlay of a million dollars.
Rev. Father Lucas, of the Order of St. Benedictine, has been in the city for the past week visiting Father Pius, who is in charge of St. Bonifacius' church here. Father Lucas is a noted poet and the author of the passion plays, which are given during the Christmas holidays by the pupils and monks at San Subia every year.
At the monastery Father Lucas is the leader of an orchestra composed purely of monks and it is said to be the finest in the South. They play nothing but pieces of Father Lucas' composition.
The above was published in the Arkansas Gazette as a special from Paris, Arkansas, and sounds like a dream.
