Full Text

Extract of a Letter from Paris, dated Sept. 13.
"Dr. Paulet, Physician in this City, having made profound Researches into the Origin of the Small-Pox, the History of which he has published, hath plainly demonstrated that no Persons bear about them the Seeds of that Malady, which did not exist in Europe till the 16th Century of the Christian Era: that the Revolutions which were then made in this Part of the World contributed much to its Propagation: and that like an outrageous Pestilence it spread itself at first into our Countries, afterwards into America, where it was unknown before the European Discoveries made there. Some established Principles are laid down in this interesting Work, that Precautions should be employed against this Disease like those used in Time of a Plague; which is the sole Method of expelling it from our Climates: All States are invited to be more attentive than they have hitherto been to the Contagion of this Distemper."

Dr. Paulet, a physician in Paris, published a history demonstrating that smallpox did not exist in Europe until the 16th century, spread due to revolutions, first to European countries and then to America where it was previously unknown. The work lays down principles for precautions against the disease similar to those used during plagues, as the sole method to expel it from climates, and invites all states to be more attentive to its contagion.
