In one of his recent commencement speeches, Governor Griffin said:
"the best possible education for our children in the public schools of Georgia.
Never before has it been so important as it is today that we provide
There are three sound reasons why we need it:
First; those who are going to college will find these colleges
besieged by thousands of more applicants than their facilities can
handle. Only those who are soundly prepared by their high
schools will be able to get in these institutions. Neither money nor
influence will be able to get them into the crowded colleges of
the future. Only those who really have sound educational prepa-
ration will ever be able to enter college.
Second; those who are NOT going to college, but directly into
jobs, will find that Georgia's tremendously increasing industrial
economy demands well-trained people to handle their work.
Third; all of our young people must be able to handle prob-
lems far more difficult than those that confronted us in the
quieter times of years gone by. They will need good education
more desperately than young people have ever needed it in the
history of the world. We must see that they get it.
If our civilization should ever be in danger of perishing, like the 20-
odd civilizations that existed before us and have now disappeared into
the mists of history, it may well be that the cause was not atom bombs,
but the deterioration of our education. We must see that this does not
happen. It is vital that we have the best educational program in Georgia
which is possible for us to give to our children. That is the job, and also
the purpose of the citizens of Georgia."
