Full Text

In the absence of real accounts from Portugal, various reports follow each other in quick succession, all of which, when attempted to be traced to their source, prove to be entirely unfounded. Yesterday evening it was reported that a telegraphic dispatch had announced the surrender of Junot's army and the Russian fleet; another rumour stated, that a third battle had been fought in which Junot had lost his life. Neither of these reports rest on any authority. This morning it is reported that a vessel arrived at one of the outports, spoke a sloop of war a few days ago, charged with dispatches containing a copy of the articles of capitulation, by which Junot and his army surrendered as prisoners of war on the 28th ult. That intelligence of the surrender of Junot is on the way home we cannot doubt, but we have received no accounts by the mails of this morning giving countenance to the above rumor. Indeed we have seldom seen a day that has brought less intelligence from the ports. The delay in the arrival of accounts from the Tagus need not, however, excite any uneasiness. At this season the northern winds blow so constantly on that coast, that vessels are often bound to make a western course to enable them to get round the Cape.
