New York Giant Option Dusty Rhodes To Phoenix

PHOENIX, Ariz. - (INS)- The San Francisco Giants today optioned outfielder Dusty Rhodes, pinch-hitting hero of the 1954 World Series, to their Phoenix farm club in the Pacific Coast League.

Manager Bill Rigney said the 30-year-old veteran is being placed on 24-hour recall in the hope that steady work with the minor league team will sharpen up his batting eye. He will report to the Phoenix Giants spring training camp at Sanford, Fla.

In 92 games with the National Leaguers last season, Rhodes batted .205 and hit four home runs. It was Rhodes' pinch-hits in the 1954 World Series with the Cleveland Indians that sparked the Giants to a four-game sweep.
