The Late Gen. Stone.—Col. (late Gen.) Charles P. Stone, of Ball's Bluff notoriety and Louisiana experience, has resigned his position in the army.

His career has been an unfortunate one since the war broke out; he has lost a promising reputation and brilliant opportunities; but he has married a wife with a fortune (and secession proclivities) in New Orleans, and proposes to enjoy both in private life.

He is, it will be remembered, a native of Greenfield; was an honored graduate of West Point; had charge of the troops and defenses of Washington during the first month or two of the rebellion; and was making fame rapidly up to about the time of the Ball's Bluff disaster, when, for alleged criminal mistakes, or suspected disloyalty, he was put under arrest, and confined in Fort Lafayette for some months.

Afterwards, without trial, and even without any formal charge having been made against him, he was released, and ordered to report to Gen. Banks in Louisiana. Here, he became that officer's chief of staff; and it is believed contributed, in some degree, to his unpopularity and want of success.

After the disastrous Red River campaign, Gen. Stone was reduced from a brigadier general of volunteers to his colonelcy in the regular army, and ordered to Washington by the war department.

And now, like Gen. Buell, whose experience has been similarly unfortunate, he resigns altogether. Gen. Stone's loyalty has been much questioned, but we believe with injustice to him. His errors are rather a lack of earnestness and appreciation of his responsibilities and opportunities, and his misfortune a want of power to meet them. He was born too early or too late.
