Full Text

Southampton, May 13. General Oglethorpe arrived here last Night, and this Morning at 6 o'Clock, saw his Regiment under Arms: They went through all their Exercise and Evolutions very much to the Satisfaction of the Spectators, of whom there was a great Number. They made a good Appearance, being finely armed, well cloathed, and strong middle-siz'd young Men. There are above twenty Gentlemen of good Families and Fortune that go as Volunteers, and carry Arms in the Regiment. There had been a Report spread, that several of the Soldiers intended to desert; and the General, after the Exercise was over, told them, that if any Man was afraid of going to serve their King and Country, he would dismiss them without any other Punishment than the Shame of stripping them of their Arms and Cloaths; upon which they all cried, that the Reports were false, and that they every Man resolved to go. The General, and Major Cook set out for Portsmouth.
