PATRIOTISM IN BUSINESS
By J. C. Penney
There is an old axiom that reads, "Where the heart is right, there is true patriotism." When the heart is right, it is reflected in a man's actions. Actions are more convincing than words.
The real patriot does not always make the greatest demonstration at a Fourth of July celebration, nor is he the man who may, in the presence of Old Glory, always doff his hat. The real patriot respects law and order and does his duty every day toward his country and his fellow men.
A patriot is one who loves his country and ever seeks to act in defense of it. A country is not the soil, the rivers, mountains or landscapes, the buildings and possessions; rather it is people, institutions, ideals for which our forefathers fought and died that we might have political, educational and religious freedom.
Acting in defense of one's country does not mean resistance only when its institutions are assailed; it also means upholding and supporting it at all times. Every man, every day, is by his actions either upholding and strengthening American institutions, or, by failing to do his duty, he is determinedly or unconsciously undermining and destroying these institutions which he should love.
