Near the corner of Butler and Auburn, the street was covered with cans, garbage and junk. Young women had a big hand in this bit of fun. Many of them marched the pavement beating empty lard cans. A few elderly persons participated, but not many.
The "Avenue" was in a steady uproar for 30 minutes. In their endeavor to destroy all in their path, these joy-mad kids also did their best to make themselves heard.
The crowd scattered at 10 o'clock upon the arrival of two police officers. One youngster who was holding a long pole was unable to elude the policeman. He was placed in the squad car.
All in all the "Avenue" had a swell time. Joe Louis was satisfied with his victory over Max Baer, but it appeared as though Atlanta's gay celebraters desired to topple all who came along.
