Believed by Chief George A. Graves of the Ogden fire department, to have been a deliberate attempt to call attention of city authorities to the condition of Thirty-sixth street between Washington and Adams avenue, a false alarm was sent in to the fire department Saturday afternoon. The street was almost impassable and two solid tires on one of the heavy trucks was ripped to ribbons. The department made its way through the street, however.
It will cost $900 to replace the tires, Chief Graves stated.
Residents of the city have made complaints for some time past regarding the condition of this street, it is said.
Chief Graves said this morning that he had overheard comment at various times to the effect that if the fire department was to be called to that vicinity that the city would see the need of repairing the street.
Saturday afternoon, some one in the vicinity of Thirtieth street and Adams avenue telephoned in the alarm, Chief Graves asserted.
The department speeded to the scene of the supposed fire but in travelling Thirty-sixth street, one of the larger trucks slid from the road into the ditch. The tires on the truck were sliced and cut and it was only because non-skid chains were on the tires that the fabric did not entirely separate, the chief said.
Chief Graves stated this morning that he has conducted an investigation which has not yet been completed. Thus far the telephone numbers of a four-party line have been secured. One of the four parties called the department, Chief Graves avers.
