Last Thursday the wind blew so hard here from N. to E. as to alarm the inhabitants very much, and between the hours of 12 and 3 on Friday morning the gale increased, shifting to the different points between N. E. and S. E. and became so violent as to raise the most dreadful apprehensions of a hurricane: but before 4 o'clock the wind suddenly and providentially shifted to N. and by 6 o'clock to N. W. and the following part of the day was quite calm and serene. During the gale some damage was done to the small craft in the harbour, but all the large vessels rode it out, without receiving any considerable damage. Most of the houses in town, especially those built of brick upon the bay, were terribly shaken; and many trees, &c. were blown down.
It is feared that some loss has been sustained in the country, but we are most apprehensive of great damage being done the shipping on the coast, as the gale came in from sea.
