THE SITUATION IN GREECE.
Greece is again in the throes of internal trouble, and coming as it does atop of the crushing defeat at the hands of the Turks gives every indication of a realization on the part of the people of that country of the deplorable mistake that was made in casting Venizelos aside and recalling Constantine.
It was believed to be a most unwise move at the time and subsequent events have fully demonstrated it. The abdication of Constantine means that his star has set for a second time. Whether the Greeks are going to be satisfied with the bringing to the throne of Prince George is decidedly uncertain.
Constantine has stood high in the eyes of his people. They have been ready to do anything for him. This was manifest before the disclosure of his German leaning in the first days of the World war, and it again came strongly to the surface when they insisted upon his recall. Even thereafter they gave liberally of funds and men for the purpose of endeavoring to hold that which had been won for Greece by the efforts of Venizelos.
Constantine has played with Greece in a manner which doesn't please to say the least. The country knows what it has meant to be denied allied support.
This has been emphasized by the losses sustained in Asia-Minor, the allied approval of the return of the Turks to Europe and the taking back of part of Thrace. After having realized ambitions it is hard to see them dashed to pieces and it remains to be seen what Greece will insist upon in making a new start to regain what it can of a former prestige. Whatever it does will be no more unusual than was the recall of Constantine. Not many kings get two chances.
