NO SHOES IN SUMMER TIME

Yet This Wealthy Kansas Farmer Rides About in an Expensive Motor Car.

Emporia, Kan.-From the moment he feels the first balmy breath of spring until the frost nips him in the fall, Moses Williams of near Emporia, wears no shoes.

"Useless extravagance wearing shoes in warm weather," says Mr. Williams, which is his reason for forgoing a number of things that most persons regard as necessities.

That there is merit from a financial standpoint in the Williams theories of frugality is evidenced by the fact that their author is the possessor of several fine farms in the rich country surrounding Emporia, and his fellow townsmen estimate his wealth at anywhere from $100,000 to $300,000. He adds at least $2.50 a year to that fortune by denying himself the vanity of shoes in summer time.

Emporia long since became accustomed to the sight of Moses Williams in the warm months driving about town in a big motor car, one ample, dusty calloused, bare foot caressing the brake. His costume at such times is likely to be the last word in picturesque and unstudied negligee, open-work patterns predominating. Mr. Williams is strong for fresh air and he takes it straight through numerous openings in his garments, including an automatic ventilator in the roof of his hat.

Moses Williams is said to be about 70 years old. He is healthy and contented and doesn't care whether or not anyone objects to his unclad feet.
