Hail To Decatur, Quaint City Of Fond Beauty
(lines Written at Antioch AME Church, Decatur, Georgia)
Hail to Decatur, quaint city of fond beauty
Hail to DeKalb's rugged quarry land,
Stone Mountain looks down in long vigil duty
Where sunrise and sunset in pageantry band
From Agnes Scott's to Avondale's glory
Of gay stucco gables, the stone knits in pearl
It's tale of gay splendor in underground story
To study the bosoms of a thousand hidden worlds
Hail to Decatur, and Antioch's reminder,
Where Disciples of old for their one accord
Were first called Christians-be this a binder
Of brave battalions in the battle of the lord
In blest encampment lover dwells forever
Here where God giveth beauty her birth
And may He grant that her cunning shall never
lose its hold on the face of the earth
Hail to Decatur, gray nugget of beauty
Hail to DeKalb's old quarrying grounds,
The steel picks ring the recessional of duty
As the sweat throng make the riving rounds
But sweet is the music unlocked from the layers
like strings that hold the rock in its place
And Love listens long to the angelic players
Whose marble fingers dance thro' the lace
