Druggist's Wife Asks Pretty Girl About Relations With Dr. Woods; Then Shoots
MATRON IS ARRESTED
BIRMINGHAM, Ala., July 9.- A beautiful young woman is lying in a critical condition at Hillman hospital and an infuriated wife who sought to save her home from her alleged rival is in the Southside jail pending the outcome of the young woman's condition If she dies no bond can be made and a formal charge of murder will be lodged against the wife.
Sunday night about 7:00 pretty Miss May Katherine George, 1720 19th street, Ensley, walked into the Wood drug company at 328 17th street, North. Immediately upon her entrance in the store, Mrs. Wilhelmia Woods, wife of Dr. C. N. Woods, proprietor of the establishment, called her into the rear of the store, where Dr. Woods was filling a prescription, and charged the woman with keeping company with her husband. The girl denied any knowledge of such "carryings on" whereupon the infuriated wife drew a gun and started firing.
Three bullets struck Miss George. The wounded girl then started to the front of the store and made it to the sidewalk where she collapsed in the arms of Curtis Blake and said "call a doctor"
An Echols & Strong ambulance was hailed as it was passing and the young woman was rushed to the Hillman hospital where she was admitted in a critical condition. She was weakened from the loss of blood and several blood transfusions may be necessary to save her life.
The most serious wound was in the left side which may prove fatal.
Mrs. Woods, a native of Miami, Florida, has been married to Dr. Woods for several years. They formerly operated a drug store in Ensley but moved to the present location two years ago.
Miss George is an employee at the Parisian Department store where she operates an elevator
