Full Text

Extract of a letter from a gentleman in London, dated January 7, 1778.

The misfortune at Saratoga needs not occasion any dejection. A proper spirit is now excited through the nation, and preparations are everywhere making for a much more vigorous campaign. You would be astonished to see with what ardour levies are raising in each of the three Kingdoms, and at private expense. Our military strength will be greatly; and I trust will be sufficiently augmented. The cause of Truth, I think, and Honour, must finally prevail. The British Lion is roused in earnest. nor have I any doubt but the standards of Rebellion will shrink before him. Our Libellers and Aleymongers, and patriotic papers, are now full of a French war, as visibly approaching; but on enquiry of persons who are the best judges, I can assure you that Government is under no apprehension of that nature. We are well prepared, in the mean time: and should the Monseurs be even disposed for war. From some just events on the Continent of Europe, those will find work enough on their hands there, without intermeddling in the affairs of America, which would not be for the interest of France, nor is the French King in the least inclined to it.
