Full Text

The Invincible Ingraham.
It was a thrilling tale, and we dislike
to spoil it by telling the truth, but
justice to our readers and regard for the
high mission we are endeavoring to perform
compels us to "speak right out in
meeting." We refer to the story of Mr.
Ingraham, published in our issue of last
Saturday morning; how he stood off
fifteen Indians, shooting ten of them
after they had killed two of his companions,
and how Mason's train came up and his men
assisted in burying the dead. Parties who
arrived here Friday noon met Mason's train
on Saturday, the 2nd inst., on its way from
Deadwood, at a point beyond the Cheyenne
river, while Ingraham reported that his fight
occurred on Indian creek on the Sunday
following, and that Mason came along
from this direction after the fight. The
same parties say they traveled along Indian
creek nearly all day on the Sunday in
question, seeing no Indians, and hearing no
shots. It would seem from this that "Mr.
Ingraham," in his thirst for fame, has
forsworn truth, as it was impossible for
Mason to have reached the point mentioned
by him so soon.

Story Details

The published tale of Mr. Ingraham heroically fighting off fifteen Indians, killing ten after his companions' deaths, with Mason's train arriving to help bury the dead, is exposed as false. Witnesses met Mason's train from Deadwood on Saturday beyond Cheyenne river, and traveled Indian creek on Sunday without seeing Indians or hearing shots, making the timeline impossible.
