STATES VIEWS FOR A GREATER SEATTLE
"Rush-hour parking restrictions in downtown streets have failed to facilitate traffic flow, while tow cars jam more traffic than offending vehicles."
With that forthright statement heading a list of 15 municipal issues which would be aggressively dealt with, the campaign platform released today by Allan Pomeroy, Seattle mayoralty candidate, declared that synchronized traffic signals and express thoroughfares must be established to cope with Seattle's traffic congestion.
The platform also gave top priority to sewage disposal. Deploring the fact that over 100-million gallons of raw sewage being poured daily into Puget Sound is ruining a paradise for swimmers, fishermen, and yachtsmen, and menacing community health, Pomeroy said that sewage disposal plants must be established immediately.
Declaring that the police-precinct system must be restored in the interest of public safety, the platform said the move would bring the police department closer to the people.
Iterating that City Light is undeniable, the candidate, a 1931 graduate of the University of Washington law school, emphasized that the dream of the late J. D. Ross has thus far created assets of 80-million dollars in the people's favor, and declared that future management and control of this ever-enlarging utility must be guarded in the public interest.
Expand development of parks and playgrounds as a major weapon against juvenile delinquency.
Personally strive to obtain for Seattle, her just share of State gasoline taxes so that streets may be maintained properly.
Develop a low-cost housing program for low-income groups.
Support the school board's plans to replace overcrowded, antiquated, and unsafe school buildings.
Assume primary responsibility in maintaining cordial relations with neighboring areas.
Uphold and defend labor's rights.
Bar racial or religious discrimination, and establish a City Fair Employment Practices plan.
Expand small-boat moorage-facilities.
Develop and consolidate veterans' rights and preferences before any possible changing economic conditions cause widespread hardships.
Develop a modern world port for Seattle in keeping with the new Seattle-Tacoma airport; establish sales representation in world cargo centers, and strengthen the ties within the state.
A member of the Seattle Bar Association, Phi Alpha Delta law fraternity, and Sigma Pi social organization, his legal experience includes a short period in 1941 as acting Seattle police judge, and justice of the Peace, Kitsap County, 1934-36.
