Song.
Best loved one and fairest! though now far apart
Thy image is cherished within my fond heart,
The angel that hovers above all my dreams,
Whose face with the light of affection so gleams;
Its beauty drives off the foul visions of care,
Relieving my senses from grief and despair.
I think of thee hourly, and bright in my heart,
Best loved one! thy image hath ever a part.
Best loved one and fairest! how is it with thee?
Doth memory ever remind thee of me?
Of one who hath left thee with deepest regret,
And absent can never thee, dearest, forget;
Though serving my country in hardships and strife,
In perils and battles exposing my life,
I think of thee hourly, and bright in my heart.
Best loved one, thy image hath ever a part.
Best loved one and fairest! if thou wert but near
These woods like a paradise bright would appear
The bloom of the flowers, fresh pleasures impart,
The notes of the wild songster thrill thro' my heart
Thy voice in these solitudes then would be heard,
Much sweeter to me than the song of the bird;
I think of thee hourly, and bright in my heart,
Best loved one, thy image hath ever a part.
Best loved one and fairest! short may the time be.
For me to remain so far severed from thee;
On wings of the eagle, oh! fast may it fly!
And I be permitted unto thee to hie:
The pangs of our parting forgotten remain,
The joy of our meeting reward all our pain,
I think of thee hourly, and bright in my heart,
Best loved one! thy image hath ever a part.
Best loved one and fairest! may heaven's bright smile
Thy pathway illumine and keep thee from guile
Its surest protection be over thee thrown,
Thy future with pleasures and blessings be strewn.
When thro' with this life, in a bright world above,
May we be united forever in love.
I think of thee hourly, and bright in my heart,
Best loved one! thy image hath ever a part.
