Children Flee When Little Red Dog Wagon Appears, Says Canine Catch-er: One Boy Hides Fido Under Bed for Protection.
C. W. Hunter, official dog catcher for Albuquerque, is well known by many small boys in the town. They know him to fear him, too, not for any fault of his, but partly because of the fact that many mothers threaten to turn their boys over to the poundmaster if they do not do just so and so. And when the red dog wagon drives up and stops in front of a house it is nothing unusual to see the yard deserted of the kiddies. And, according to Mr. Hunter, they often take their dogs with them, too, for sometimes a "poor blooded" pup or an old decrepit dog is permitted to stay on the place just because the kiddies are in love with it and are told by their parents that they must take good care of the dog "and treat 'im well or the dogman with the little red wagon will end his career."
Mr. Hunter tells one experience where he went to take a dog because the owners had not seen fit to pay the dog tax. When he made his appearance at the front gate a little boy about five years old came out on the porch and said, "You can't get Fido; I hid him under the bed."
The boy's mother invited the poundmaster in to adjust matters with him, and the boy preceded him, saying. "Please, mister, don't look under the bed."
