Full Text

PROSCRIPTION.—If we can believe the Democratic papers of Chicago, the Journal and Democratic Press, a wholesale system of proscription is going on in Illinois, under the patronage of the Post-Master General aided by Senator Douglas. The men displaced from office are Democrats, but they are not Slave Democrats, and therefore do not suit Mr. Douglas. Who will say after this that "the patronage of the General Government is not brought in conflict with the freedom of Elections?" Here we have a general sweep of Postmasters throughout the State because the incumbents dare to think for themselves on a measure of policy! In the pure days of the Republic such an interference with the freedom of opinion would have been considered good cause of impeachment. But now it is looked upon as almost a matter of course among the corrupt politicians of the day. If the people of Illinois submit to this, they will be but one degree lower than Slaves; they can help themselves, and the Slave cannot.
