Full Text

New Orleans, May 19.—Letters have been received in town to the 1st inst. from Fort Montgomery, which state that a small party of the U. S. troops under the command of Lieut. Espey, whilst ascending the Escambia with provisions, were attacked with a sudden and unexpected volley of small arms from a body of Indians, by which one of the soldiers was killed and two severely wounded. As soon as intelligence of this event reached Fort Montgomery, Major W. Youngs put himself at the head of a detachment in quest of the enemy. In the vicinity of bayou Texar, he encountered and routed them, with the loss on his side of only one soldier killed. That of the enemy in killed, wounded and prisoners, was 30: the remainder, to the number of 57, sued for peace, and they were sent to the interior of the Creek nation. Bayou Texar is not laid down on any map that we are acquainted with. We believe it flows from the east into the bay of Escambia.
