KENT - SUSSEX FAIR OPENED

Yesterday Was First Day and Crowds Poured in the Gates To See Attractions

GOVERNOR'S DAY PLANS

Delaware's farmers and rural folks left their cares behind them yesterday as they flocked by the thousands to the opening of the five-day Kent and Sussex Fair at Harrington. More than 7000 were estimated to have been in attendance the opening day. Farm chores were done in a hurry as farmers' families prepared to trek to the event of the summer. The men were eager to see the live stock and the grain exhibits. The women were anxious to see the needle work exhibit and above all, the cooking and preserves exhibits. As for the children, those under 16 years of age were admitted free yesterday. They romped and careened through the fair grounds with as much enthusiasm as if they were at a circus. The fair opened with the customary pomp and ceremony. This is the fourteenth annual Kent and Sussex Fair. When the gates opened children under sixteen years of age were admitted free. Many of the nearby farmers came with huge lunch baskets bringing the entire family for a day's outing. When once they enter the fair grounds they do not leave until they are ready to go home in the evening. The first card of horse races started at 1:30 o'clock. There are no dull moments on the race track. The vaudeville entertainment is bigger than a three ring circus, and is shown while the horses are getting ready. Governor's day will be observed Thursday, when Governor C. Douglass Buck, with his staff, and a number of State officials will be in attendance. There will be a display of fireworks each evening. The racing program has been arranged as follows: Today, 2:14 trot, 2:18 pace, 2 year old and under pace. Thursday, 2:10 pace, 3 year old and under trot, 3 year old and under pace. Friday, 2:18 trot, 2:20 pace, 2 year old and under trot. The purses for all the races are $300 except the 2 year old and under pace and trot which is $200. Seven speed events are listed for the automobile races Saturday. The largest task of all will be the judging and awarding of prizes. The judges started their work yesterday morning but it will be some time before they will have their work completed.
