WASHINGTON. (AP)—A federal district court jury has decided that Richard Hippelheuser, who was a special assistant to former secretary of commerce Henry A. Wallace, must pay $50,000 for alienating the affections of another man's wife, now divorced.
After an hour's deliberations, the jury decided Hippelheuser should pay the amount to Carl Dawson Smith 3rd, 35-year-old lawyer. Smith was awarded $25,000 compensatory damages and $25,000 punitive damages.
It was one of the largest awards ever made here in a heart balm action. Smith had asked for $100,000.
