THE COLD SPELL BROKEN.
THAT FRIGID WAVE MOVING EASTWARD.
IT LEAVES NUMBERS OF VESSELS FAST IN THE ICE—A SCARCITY OF OYSTERS AND COAL PREDICTED.
The backbone of the cold snap is broken. The cold wave, as the scientists call it, is making rapid strides toward classic Boston and other points of intellectuality in the land of pork and beans. In the far west, where the extreme cold first made its appearance, a great change has come over affairs during the past twenty-four hours.
The track of the inclement weather has passed to the north and east, and the extremes experienced here a couple of days ago are beginning to be felt. For instance, in Albany, N. Y., it was four degrees colder yesterday than on Saturday; in Burlington, Vt., 5 degrees colder; in New London, 1 degree; in New York city, 1 degree; in Oswego, 1 degree. The thermometer at Portland, Me., shows that it was four degrees warmer yesterday, while in Boston it was 3 degrees warmer.
The wave seems to travel with great deliberation, and it is expected that it will strike the far east to-day some time. It does not lose any in its moving across the country, but seems to hold its own very well.
The Weather Bureau reports show the condition of the atmosphere at the various points in the country where the cold wave first appeared. All these indicate warmer weather:
