The Christian

Today I watch him walk with measured pace
A black man underneath a summer sky.
No smoke or raucous laugh adorns his face
His lips are taut, his head erect and high
A row of trees along a country lane,
An open space, a building prim and square
And dark folk seeking now an organ strain
To soothe their souls to banish thoughts of care
In praise of a Creator whose glad reign
Still banishes their sorrow, heals their pain.
