FRIENDSHIP AND LOVE.
The happiness of social virtue depends on the matured affection which arises between the sexes. —The cares and vexations which continually present themselves in an intercourse with the world, can only be compensated by the smiles and endearments of the female sex. It spurs men on to industry, that they may be the better enabled to endear themselves to, and by the acts of generosity and kindness, win the love of women. For so strongly is the mind of that sex attached to dress, it may be said to be the universal passion. However, to cement the harmony between the sexes, founded on mutual inclination, great care should be taken that friendship be the foundation of love, and that nothing but the greatest importance, wherein the happiness of others are interwoven, should ever be a secret from the other. A want of confidence is a want of esteem, and the most trivial circumstances, when veiled in mystery, are daggers to a mind of sensibility. As you value your happiness, let love be without dissimulation; it poisons the sweets of domestic happiness; it rankles in the heart, creates sensations which destroy the delicacy of the passions, estranges the heart from the objects of fond desire. No man can be happy who roves from a fixed point, or woman who keeps a man's company, merely for the ease he administers to her convenience; for "nought but love can answer love, and render bliss secure."
