Trotsky Says Russian Cannot Fight with Italy

(By The Associated Press)

MEXICO CITY. Sept. 16--Russia cannot afford to engage in a war with Italy or any other foreign power because of her pressing internal problems, Leon Trotsky said. "I firmly do not believe an Italo-Russian war is imminent," he said. It is barely inconceivable except as a complement to a Russo-German war. I don't believe Stalin wishes to embarrass European capitalists nations, on the contrary. he seeks to convince them by all means that he is a firm pillar of the status quo and of established order.

Russian intervention in the Spanish civil war is in the form of "police" duty he said and that it has the tacit approval of France and Great Britain. The exiled former Russian dictator also said he did not believe Russia would interfere in the conflict between China and Japan, although he had heard of reports that Russian airplanes were being shipped to Shanghai.
