WASHINGTON, D.C.—(PAU)—Tourism is now Mexico's third largest dollar earning industry. Total receipts for last year ran to about $650,000,000 from an estimated 600,000 visitors.
The vital role of tourist travel in building up the Mexican economy not only by adjusting the deficit in the national trade balance and strengthening Mexico's currency, but also in providing funds that find their way into new industries, was pointed out at a recent meeting of the Mexico City Rotary Club.
Alejandro Pardo, Adviser and Assistant Manager of the Banco de Mexico, the central government bank, said that of the $560,000,000 in tourist receipts, about $400,000,000 was spent in the border towns and $160,000,000 was spent in the interior of Mexico.
These statistics the newly-created Department of Tourism and the Mexican Tourist Association, of which Pardo is Secretary, hope to adjust more equally throughout the country this year through a campaign to introduce more tourists, especially those from the United States to more of Mexico.
