London, Oct. 23,

A Calcutta despatch to the Times states that the prospects for crops in Bombay are daily more gloomy. The districts of Khandeish, Nassick, Ahmendnuggur, Poona, Sholapore, Kaladgi and Dharwar, containing a population of nearly six millions, are threatened with severe distress.

The local government estimates that over 200,000 persons must be relieved in these districts alone. It is stated the Monsoon crops have entirely failed, and the absence of rain prevents the sowing of the rubbee and winter crops.

The collector of Poona reports that not a single blade of grass is visible for miles. Tanks and rivers are drying up, and cattle are dying from starvation. The collector at Sholapore gives a still worse report.

The government has opened relief works and is employing people in excavating tanks and making roads.
