Navy Department Vetoes Alaskan Fleet Proposal

The Navy Department has declined the invitation extended recently by Alaska communities for the fleet to be stationed for part of the year in Alaskan waters, according to advices from the office of the Alaska Delegate to Congress, A. J. Dimond. In a letter to the Delegate, Admiral W. V. Pratt, acting chief of naval operations said in part:

"I assure you that the Navy Department appreciates the interest of the people of Alaska in the national defense and I regret very much that under conditions now existing it is not practicable to predict any forthcoming visit of the fleet to Alaskan waters."

Although declining to send major ships to the Territory, it is understood that several destroyers will visit Alaskan waters during the summer.
