POETRY
From the Truth Teller
NIGHT THOUGHTS.
The language of the Soul lives not in Sound
The liquid turns of some melodious lute
May waken harmony and joy around.
But all: the Soul's perpetually mute
And still lives on with long hid feelings fraught
Struggling to give embodiment to thought.
The deepest feelings man can ever know
Are those which in the heart's still centre dwell
O'er which the ceaseless tide of thought must flow-
Nor gain the power its secrets e'er to tell
They lie within the Caverns of the Soul
Like gems o'er which old Oceans billows roll.
What now I feel the tongue can ne'er unfold--
My heart is beating and my Soul's in motion,
I realize a thousand thoughts unfold
Which now awakens undescribed emotion-
Thoughts which I know by utterance might bless—
Thoughts which I keep in sadness and distress.
I fain would speak of what I truly feel
Of hopes from life and death, and woe and fate
All different-which joyously reveal
A firm conviction that another State
Awaits the glorious attribute of man
Which seeks a wider home than Earth's brief span.
Come Silence now-Desire is past away
I close in humbleness and yet in woe
And wait with Patience for the sure day
Which must enable me to see and know
The origin and nature of the Soul-
Its life its purpose--and its final goal.
