THE TORY PARTY IN AMERICA.
The real tory party of this country, are recognized by their brethren of the tory party in England, notwithstanding the disguise of the assumed name of Whig, taken for the purpose of deceiving those whom they may stigmatize here as the ignorant multitude. The London Age of the 13th ult., one of the staunchest tory papers in England, knows the supporters of English tory principles, in the partisans of the Bank, and cheers them on with the hope "are not done yet," without taking the slightest exception to the name of Whig, which renders the party bearing it quite odious to the editor on the other side of the water. But he understands it to be a mere mask worn by the Wellington antagonists of the President in this country. The paragraph of the Age, it will be further remarked, indirectly assumes, that the debt due from the people of this country to the Bank of the United States, is a debt due to Europe. This is to a great extent true.—The stock held in the name of American citizens, is held by them for the most part as the agents of foreigners--and in considering as a portion of "our commercial debt to Europe." the debt of $52,000,000 due to the Bank, to be provided for out of the $60,000,000 worth of the cotton crop exported, the Editor doubtless designs to comfort the holders of the stock, 'with the prospect of gathering in that capital and its profits, which they are not likely hereafter to be permitted to impose as a burdensome annual tax on their pack horse "Jonathan."
