FROM THE DEMOCRATIC PRESS

A copy of the following circular was sent at the date it bears, to the several gentlemen who were placed on the electoral ticket by the Democratic members of the legislature of Pennsylvania, in March last. From a very large majority of the gentlemen, satisfactory answers have been received. Some of the gentlemen, it is presumed, have not received the letters addressed to them, and in consequence duplicates have been sent; but as the election is rapidly approaching, the General Committee of Correspondence have deemed it proper to publish the letter, and thus take another chance of its reaching the persons to whom it has been forwarded, or at least the committees of correspondence of the several districts, who it is expected will promptly attend to the duties that have been imposed upon them by the republican members of the legislature of Pennsylvania. That there may be no mistake as to who are the gentlemen nominated as electors and members of committees of correspondence, the proceedings of the meeting of the republican members of the legislature, are this day re-published.

The General Committee of Correspondence request the editors of the several Democratic papers throughout the State to re-publish the above note, the circular and proceedings of the republican members.

Philadelphia, June 18, 1816.

Sir--At a meeting of the Democratic members of the legislature of Pennsylvania, held at Harrisburg, on the 11th day of March last, you were nominated as one of the Electors of President and Vice-President of the United States, to be supported at the ensuing Presidential election.

A choice of candidates for these important offices, took place at a meeting of the democratic members of both branches of Congress, at the city of Washington, on the 16th day of March last, when, after due consideration and a vote taken, James Monroe was recommended as President of the United States, and Daniel D. Tompkins as Vice-President. The nominations thus made, in the usual manner, were unanimously acquiesced in; and these, our distinguished fellow citizens, having consented to serve, will, it is believed, receive the undivided support of the democratic party throughout the union.

The undersigned having been appointed the committee of general correspondence for this State, by the democratic members of the legislature of Pennsylvania, and authorised to take the proper measures for the support of these candidates, have felt it their duty, in conformity to established usage, to ask of the electors such pledges as will enable the committee to give to the people a satisfactory assurance upon this highly interesting and important subject. With this view, they have requested and obtained from Paul Cox, John Geyer, John Conard, Daniel Bussier and William Brook, the electors in this district, a written declaration that it is their determination, if chosen electors, to vote for these candidates.

In further prosecution of the same views, the committee feel it their duty to ask you "whether, if chosen an elector, you will vote for James Monroe, as President, and Daniel D. Tompkins, as Vice President of the United States?"

Be pleased to favor us with an early answer, and to direct it to Mr. John Binns, the secretary of the committee, at No. 70, Chesnut-street.

We remain, with great respect, your fellow citizens,

THOMAS SERGEANT,

JOHN BINNS,

JOSEPH M'COY,

JACOB SOMMER,

JOHN M'LEOD

WILLIAM RUNKEL.
