Full Text
Gen. Taylor And the Union.—A letter describing the President's visit to lay the corner stone of the Virginia Monument to Washington, relates a noteworthy observation which Gen. Taylor made to a gentleman. He said, "I can be absent from Washington but three days. I have come here to partake in this solemn ceremony. At a time like this, I hope the act, and the association connected with the name and character of Washington, will arouse all the better feelings of our nature, and make us more disposed to adopt his caution on the subject of sectional divisions. He must have been gifted with almost prophetic spirit, to have foreseen and guarded us against the danger of sectional feeling."
