It becomes our duty to publish the following articles from the Herald, Republican, and Every Evening and Commercial, showing how utterly devoid the latter paper is of truth in its reference to the GAZETTE and its editor:

From the Morning Herald, July 13.

[Communicated.]

MR. EDITOR: There are many opinions as to who would be a fit and proper person to represent our State at Washington. In my opinion Caleb P. Johnson, Esq., editor of the Gazette, would be the man to send there. He has always been a strong party man, has made his own fortune by industry, right on political questions, and I think would do better than any man as yet spoken of.

TAX PAYER.

From the Republican, July 13.

Another candidate for congressional honors has been sprung upon the public this morning by a correspondent to the Morning Herald, and that candidate is none other than the veteran editor of the Gazette, C. P. Johnson. If persistent labor for a party is any recommendation for a Democratic candidate, then our neighbor should be the candidate, and his disposition to kick in the traces of party shows that he must be conciliated. We are a Johnson man.

From the Every Evening and Commercial, July 13.

A correspondent of one of the city papers suggests that the Capitol at Washington be turned into a house of refuge for the imbecile. At least that is the only explanation of the opinion expressed by the correspondent that the editor of the Gazette should be sent there from this State. But perhaps the editor of the Gazette wrote the communication himself, which would at least have been a very manly thing for him to do.

We do not believe there is an intelligent gentleman in the city, who has known us, that would believe for a moment we wrote or had anything to do with the article from the Herald. We did not write it; nor had we any knowledge of it whatever until we read it in the Herald on Saturday.

Why Rev. Mr. Mann is assailed over our shoulders we do not know. We had not his personal acquaintance until Saturday and are at a loss to know why his name is thus insultingly used in connection with ours.

It is unfair to thus maliciously assail anybody. We are obliged to numerous friends who have congratulated us upon the compliment of "Tax-payer," as well as to the Republican for its pleasantry.
