Extract of a letter received in this city from Aux Cayes, St. Domingo, dated March 10, 1846.

"The town of Aux Cayes is at this moment in a state of great excitement; and, from all appearances, I entertain fears that the lives and property of American subjects are in jeopardy.

"On the 7th instant, news arrived here that Gen. Riche had been declared President of Hayti in place of Pierrot, and that he (Riche) had sent a body of troops into this part of the island to enforce his claim.

"The authorities of this place, both civil and military, are not agreed amongst themselves on this subject—some declaring for Riché, and others for Pierrot. In consequence of this, last evening the alarm guns were fired, martial law proclaimed, the inhabitants put under arms, and cannon planted in the streets in all directions.

"This, as a matter of course, has put a stop to all business; the merchants sending all their goods and chattels to the stores of the British merchants, and, at the same time, their wives and families for protection, fearing pillage and outrage."
