HON. JAMES R. THOMAS.
The Lewisburg Messenger responds as follows to the article of the Shelbyville True Union, which we published last week:-
We say that many of these charges under the circumstances, if a dozen party. Has Mr. Thomas ever been contrary, he has laid down his person of principle, and willingly replied to district. His claim upon the democracy qualification, no one can doubt. He has arrived at an age sufficiently mature to honor our district in the councils of the nation.
Against Mr. Whitthorne we have nothing to say. He is a good democrat and a clever man, but much younger than Mr. Thomas. He has not done for the party the unremunerated service that Mr. Thomas has; therefore he is not entitled to the same laurels.
So far as to his harmonizing the democratic party in this district at present is concerned, we would like to ask our neighbor of the True Union, what evidence he has that Mr. Whitthorne would be a more acceptable man to the democracy of this district at this time, than Mr. Thomas is? Perhaps he knows how things are around the square of Shelbyville, but we feel that we hazard nothing in saying that the people of Marshall County at least would much prefer Mr. Thomas. In fact, the public mind seems no disquietus in our horizon. Never was there more harmony among the democracy, when two were candidates. And we cannot see who authorized our neighbors to dictate another candidate at present. Perhaps they feel a little piqued at the consciousness of the fact that the only chance for the success of their favorite is, to stir up a dust by a cry of division, and not the more prominent ruled off by convention.
