During the war a young man in East Tennessee bade farewell to his wife and child and joined the army. Upon his return he found his wife and her father were bitterly opposed to him in politics, and politely gave him to understand that his room was better than his company. He left them and went to Atlanta, hoping to earn enough to furnish a comfortable home where he could at last enjoy the company of his loved ones. But suddenly the word came that both wife and child were dead. Almost crazed, he wandered about until he came to Nashville. There he prospered in business, and married a widow with a little daughter. He lived happily until, not long ago, a lawyer in Nashville received a letter from a lady asking if her husband had not died in that city and left some money. The lawyer in reply told her the truth, that, instead of being dead, he was married. The first wife immediately commenced suit for divorce and alimony. When the writ was served upon him he was shocked as if by lightning. His wife and child living, and he married again, seemed beyond his comprehension; but, wild as was his agony, his thoughts were occupied with the pain that must be felt by the two innocent women who would thus be injured. His second wife was dying of consumption. The lawyer saw a way out of the trouble. He stayed proceedings until death should do its work. The loving, gentle woman was told all. She begged her husband--for so she still called him--to go to the rightful wife and provide for her. This he did; and now the shadow from his heart and home is slowly lifting. -[Indianapolis Sentinel.
